In an effort to raise awareness about the importance of freedom of expression and association, the Adamson University Student Government (AUSG) recently held an academic event titled 'LIBERTAS: The Power of Speech'. The event, which was held at the Co Po Ty Audio Visual Hall on April 28, was well-attended by Adamsonians who were eager to learn more about their rights and responsibilities as individuals.

The first speaker of the event was Marc Siapno, Head of the Strategic Communication Division of the Commission on Human Rights. He emphasized that just because society appears to have some level of freedom, it doesn't mean that it is truly free. He reminded the audience that the fight for human rights and freedom of expression is a continuous struggle that requires constant vigilance.

Following Siapno's talk, Atty. Jose Manuel "Chel" Diokno, a well-known human rights lawyer, shared his insights on the importance of freedom of association. He emphasized that freedom of speech and association go hand in hand and that a true democracy cannot exist without these fundamental freedoms. Diokno urged the audience to exercise their rights and use their voices to fight for justice and equality.

After the two guest speakers, Adamsonians participated in an open forum discussion with them. The discussion focused on current events related to human rights violations, threats, and inequalities, and emphasized the importance of using online platforms to shed light on these issues.

The event was held against the backdrop of a recent report by the United Nations Human Rights Office, which noted that access to justice for victims of abuse in the Philippines remains "very limited". The report also highlighted structural shortcomings in the country's judiciary, indicating that there is still much work to be done in terms of protecting and promoting human rights.

Despite the challenges, however, events like LIBERTAS are a reminder that there are individuals and organizations working tirelessly to uphold human rights and fight for freedom of expression and association. By coming together to learn, discuss, and take action, Adamsonians are contributing to this important cause and helping to build a more just and equitable society for all.
