Students at Adamson University mourn the passing of a fellow “Klasmeyt”.
The atmosphere at Adamson Univesity was thick with sorrow and regret as students mourned the death of one of their own.
A 24-year-old chemical engineering student named John Matthew Salilig lost his life on the 18th of February, 2023, as a result of wounds he received during his initiation into the infamous Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity.
Salilig wasn’t a very famous person, but his loss had a significant impact on his alma mater, which caused all of the students and staff to wear black as a gesture of sorrow. There was a moment of silence to honor the young man, who still had a lot of potential in life. Moreover, a requiem mass was also held to honor his memory.
John, who was dubbed a "joker" by his friends, always had a knack for making people laugh and demonstrating his concern. His death was keenly felt, and both his instructors and classmates showed their admiration in various ways.
The majority of the memorial service was held on Saint Vincent Grounds at Adamson University, where teachers, staff, and students gathered to honor John's remarkable life and unfortunate passing. The kids also planned a demonstration to oppose hazing, the activity that claimed John's life.
In addition to pledging support for the battle against hazing, the AdU community also made a commitment to honor John Matthew Salilig.
The tragedy serves as a reminder of the perils of hazing and the necessity of speaking out against it. The Adamson University community has been left without a talented young man's presence, but his legacy will endure thanks to the group's efforts to stop hazing and stop such tragedies from happening in the future.
