Since the minimum boarding fee for both rail lines will be increased to PHP 13.29 from PHP 11, and for every kilometer traveled, an additional PHP 1.21 from just PHP 1 will be applied, the Sunrise Herald conducted interviews with four students at the campus to get their thoughts on the increase in the LRT fare as their mode of transportation, on April 27, 2023.
“Hindi naman sila nakakakuha ng satisfaction pagdating sa services na binibigay ng LRT kaya hindi reasonable ‘yung pagtataas nila ng fare (They [the commuters] don’t feel enough satisfaction when it comes to the service that LRT provides so there’s no reason for them to increase their fare.”), Venz Morgadez, a Political Science student said.
The same goes for the other students who were struggling to budget their allowance when it comes to transportation fees. What they want is a better commuting experience through proper allocation of the funds that also came from the transportation fee hike.
However, that is not the case. Instead of seeing improvement in the system, they all say the same– “walang pagbabago (there is no change).”
In accordance with an instruction from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista, however, stated in a press briefing that the implementation of the fare increases had been deferred "pending a thorough study on the economic impact" to commuters. When asked how long the Department of Transportation (DOTr) will defer the implementation of the new fare, Bautista stated that it might take a few months.
Still, those commuters, especially students who have tight allowances would not prefer increasing the fare since it would only disrupt the budget they have for every day.
