“Uy, parang gusto ko na rin maging SA ah, libre tuition eh (It seems like I want to become an SA too since I can receive free tuition)”.
This is one of the usual responses I get from my friends and classmates whenever I explain to them the benefits of being a student assistant at our university.
It may sound amusing at first because it covers all the tuition fees of a successful applicant plus the monthly allowance we get from the scholarship grant.
“Paano mag-aaply? Madali lang naman siguro ‘yan, tutulong ka sa pag-aayos ng mga papeles ng office (How can I apply? The duties are probably easy since all you have to do is assist your designated office on their documents and papers)”.
Little did they know that becoming one is actually like dividing yourself into two.
As a student assistant myself, I have to strictly balance my time for academics and duty hours and it is not easy as it may seem. I have to wake up every morning at five o’clock to eat my breakfast, brush my teeth, take a bath, put on my uniform, commute to school, and arrive at school at seven o’clock.
Once my duty starts, I have to do various things that have been tasked to me by my direct supervisor and our staff: filing papers, encoding on our database, going to different offices to ask for signatures, etc. As much as possible, I must not commit any mistakes since the office will be held accountable for any errors.
In between those time periods, I go to my classes and then go back to the office after my last period until five o’clock in the afternoon.
After an exhausting day, I would go home to do schoolwork before going to sleep at eleven or twelve o’clock in the evening.
And the cycle repeats.
I may have little to no time for myself because of this, but I just think of it as an advantage since I continue to gain experience and have an idea of how would it be like to work as a professional.
It is only up to me how I will look at things I am doing.
And now that you’ve caught a glimpse of an SA’s daily life, are you interested in applying for the scholarship grant?
